Opening Reception, Saturday, August 6, 3-5 PM
The Carrie Chen Gallery in collaboration with the Scone Foundation, is pleased to present the exhibition The Meaning of Memory: Works by John Hersey, John R. Hersey Jr and Cannon Hersey. This show features three generations, including literature from John Hersey, large scale paintings and drawings by John R. Hersey Jr, best described by the phrase ‘physical lyricism’ for his ability to synthesize figurative and abstract theory and methodology in his work. As well as silkscreen photographs and video installations depicting the trees and survivors of the 1945 Hiroshima bombing in Japan by Cannon Hersey. Cannon’s work pays tribute to his grandfather, John Hersey, Pulitzer Prize American journalist who famously accounted the Hiroshima bombing in a nonfiction essay published as an entire issue of The New Yorker in 1946. A public reception will be held on Saturday, August 6, from 3-5 pm, marking the 77th anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing.
